Vol. 1 [February 2008] Issue-
2 | |
| Editorial
In this issue we
are concentrating our thoughts on Obesity that has reached
epidemic proportions globally, with more than 1
billion adults overweight, at least 300 million of
them clinically obese and is a major contributor
to the global burden of chronic disease and
disability, often coexisting in developing
countries with under-nutrition. Obesity is a
complex condition, with serious social and
psychological dimensions, affecting virtually all
ages and socioeconomic groups.
Obesity and overweight pose a
major risk for serious diet-related chronic
diseases, including Type II diabetes,
cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke,
and certain forms of cancer. The health
consequences range from increased risk of
premature death, to serious chronic conditions
that reduce the overall quality of
life.
Regarding the body
image, as an interesting note, I wanted to talk a
little about the relationship between obesity and
beauty. Fashion is a shape, a changing shape. What
is considered beautiful in the eyes of one race
may be thought horrific in another. Like they say,
“beauty is in the eye of the
beholder” and for centuries beauty has
been shape.
In our next issue
we will be sharing the knowledge of Ayurvedic
Concepts in Beauty through some of our devotees of
Ayurveda.

OBESITY- AN
OVERVIEW
Dr. Mahendra Prajapati,Deptt of Physiology, DAC,
Jalandhar |
|
Now
a day's most of people are
suffering from obesity. Classical ancient texts
describe eight types of despicable persons in
which atisthaulya (obesity) is one of them.
Corpulent people are short in longevity.
Slow movement, difficult to indulge in sexual
inter course, weak, emit bad smell, much
sweating, exercise hunger and thirst are its
effects.
Waist Hip Ratio (WHR): Over past 10 years or so it has become
accepted that a high WHR (WHR >1.0 in men and
>0.85 in women) indicated abdominal fat
accumulation. It is a useful research and
screening tool.
The
control of obesity centers around maintaining
weight with in the healthy range of body mass
index of 18.5 to 24.9 Kg/m2. In those who are
already overweight, a reduction of 5-10% of body
weight is recommended as an initial goal. This
can be achieved by dietary modifications,
increased physical activity or a combination of
both to maintain a balance between energy intake
and energy expenditure.
Prevention of overweight and obesity
should begin in early childhood as the obesity
is harder to control once it is established in
adults. However weight reduction can still be
advised which requires modification of
individual's behavior and strong motivation to
lose weight and maintain ideal weight once
achieved. Click

Dr. Renu

The
epidemic of obesity is spreading worldwide. WHO,
many NGO’s, Government Organizations all are

control on our mind and body. Depleting nature
is add-on to the cause.
Still there is a solution, and it lies in
“YOGA”. It is a path to health. A proper plan of
Yogic Exercises under the guidance of a teacher

GARCINIA
CAMBOGIA
Dr. Supriya Dikshit, M.D.
Scholar |
| Garcinia, commonly known as Gambooge,
Brindleberry, Brindall berry or Malabar
tamarind, Goraka (Sri Lanka) is a subtropical
species of Garcinia native to Indonesia. It is a
small, sweet, exotic fruit native to South India
and Southeast Asia. The yellowish fruit is
pumpkin-shaped. Garcinia has garnered a lot of
attention of late as a popular natural weight
loss aid. The reason is that the rind of this
pumpkin like fruit is rich in a substance called
hydroxycitric acid / HCA, a principle extract of
Garcinia cambogia. Garcinia is a source for a
revolutionary natural diet ingredient which is
currently a rage in America, Japan, Europe, and
other western countries.
