Vol. 1 [April 2008] Issue- 4 | |
| Editorial
Vatsyayana the composer of the
original work of Kama Sutra, he describes "Kama"
as the name of the “God of Love” in the Hindu
Mythology. It is a part of pravrtti-marga, path
of sense gratification regulated by sastric
injunctions. Pravrtti-marga consists of four
goals of human life (purusartha)
–
dharma,
artha,
kama and
moksa. In the context of
varnasrama it is followed by
grihasthas, whereas
brahmacaris,
vanaprasthas and
sannyasis follow nivrtti-marga (renunciation),
path of detachment from material enjoyment.
Famous kama sutra is only a part of the body of
texts in the kama-sastra system with aesthetic
qualities of the pictorial evidence.
Centuries after
Vatsyayana first put the words to the Kama Sutra
into the path of history, readers were still
interested in his subject matter, perhaps even more
so than his contemporaries. But unfortunately the
picture of Kama Shastra has been depicted in mere
material physical sexual acts of exploitation? Then
how can this be spiritual?
Krisna employed the
Kama sutra in rasa lila, as did Balarama in his rasa
krida. About Balarama's rasa kirda, Sanatana Goswami
says in his Vaisnava Tosanai commentary, 'Becasue he
is ramah, he is expert in conjugal affairs. He is
also the Supreme Lord, so he is very expert in the
various types of conjugal pastimes mentioned in the
Kama-sutras.
Krisna employed this art
without any material selfishness. This is rasa lila,
and this is the difference between mundane and
spiritual life. However, it is difficult to remain
in the bodily life and experience the ultimate
selflessness. I don't think many people today
properly understand the Kama sutra.
According to the Kama Sutra, all of these aspects of
the life of a human being should be of equal
importance, without any of these spheres taking
precedence over the others. In order to attain a
fulfilled and meaningful life the striving after one
goal shouldn’t hamper the striving after the others.
Neglecting one of these areas leads to a diminished
stability and to a dangerous imbalance in man.
Practicing Dharma, Artha and Kama makes it possible
to lead a meaningful, practical and joyous life in
this world and the next.

Myths and Might
of Kama Sutra
There
are many myths regarding Kama
Sutra. People question whether or not its age
old traditions are relevant in today’s modern
society.
Some of the descriptions in the Kama Sutra can
be read as somewhat ridiculous. But though some
of these suggestions may seem ridiculous, they
were designed for one purpose, “to bring harmony
in marital life”.
The four aims for a
healthy life (Arogya) as per Ayurveda are
"Dharma", "Artha", "Kama" and “Moksha”. "Dharma"
meaning social duty; "Artha" the collection of
wealth for the family; "Kama" the physical
love-making and “Moksha” the
liberation from the cycle of
death and rebirth and all of the suffering and
limitation of worldly existence.
"Kama Sutra" refers not only to the art of
physical love making but also covers diverse
topics such as the decoration of house,
selection of wife, behavior between the husband
and wife and a vast array of other subjects.
A
lot of parallel references can be drawn between
"Hatha-Yoga", "Tantra" and "Kamasutra". For
example
Vatsyayana cites Padamasana (lotus
posture of yoga) as one of the position in Kama
Sutra and a lot of other positions derived from
Yoga. Yoga & Tantra teaches breath control. The
combination of Tantra, Yoga and Kama Sutra
enable the practitioner to unite with the
ultimate cosmic energy, “The
Shakti” which is
symbolized by the Great Goddess.

MULBANDHA
IN YOGA
Kundalini
yoga offers a great way to train the body for
better compliance of muscles including those
that are used in the act of sex. The path of
kundalini yoga gets tough along the way as more
and more is demanded of your body after the
pranayamas and the asanas of the
hathayoga. You are required to do the
bhandas or the locks. These locks are
nothing but special asanas that
literally lock the body into certain postures.
Of course they are specific for certain pathways
and they ensure that your ability to perform
sexually is strengthened.
Moola Bandha affects the central and sympathetic
nervous system reducing tension, therefore
affecting subsequent inflammation at the uro-genital
region. The ovaries in the female and the
prostate gland in the male receive an increased
blood circulation. Increased muscular tone is to
be noted relative to the varicocele and
hemorrhoids in those suffering such conditions,
suggesting that the practice of Moola Bandha
should be used as a prevention of these
conditions. Phlebitis and blood clotting
thrombosis is eliminated. Moola Bandha has been
shown to be beneficial for toning up the kidneys
and bladder and it generally tones up the
musculature of the female sex organs.

ASHWAGANDHA
Ashwagandha
consists of dried mature roots of Withania
somnifera Dunal. (Fam. Solanaceae), a
perennial shrub, found in waste land, cultivated
field and open grounds throughout India, widely
cultivated in certain areas of Madhya Pradesh
and Rajasthan , roots collected in winter,
washed and cut into short pieces.
It is an ironic herb
as it is a tonic and sedative all in one. It
strengthens an exhausted nervous system that can
manifest with ‘hyper’ signs such as emotional
instability, agitation or feeling stressed-out.
It has the dual action of energizing while
calming.
Its name Ashwagandha
meaning ‘the smell of a horse’, comes from the
fresh root smelling like a horse’s urine, and
also perhaps because it is renowned for
imparting the sexual stamina of a horse.
Its rejuvenating effect on
shukra dhatu
helps to alleviate asthenospermia (increasing
sperm motility), oligospermia (increasing sperm
count), poor sexual performance and helps to
reduce impotence. Its unique action or
prabhava
is to promote sexual potency and sperm
production.
